impala_chick: (Catherine The Great)

The Hulu TV series The Great has fantastic costumes. The show is set in 18th century Russia, and the best outfits of the show are worn by Catherine The Great. I love how the designers pushed the envelope and really showed Catherine's growth over the three-season series through her costumes. For the [community profile] marchmetamatterschallenge, I wanted to share my meta about her costumes over the three seasons of the show. This was also posted at my journal.

I believe The Great needs a fandom tag?

regshoe: A grey heron in flight over water (Heron)

Over the next few months I'll be hosting a read-along of The Flight of the Heron by D. K. Broster on my journal. You're invited to join in!

Published in 1925, The Flight of the Heron is a historical novel set in Scotland during the Jacobite Rising of 1745. Keith Windham is an English army officer annoyed at being sent to such a barbaric, out-of-the-way place as the Scottish Highlands; Ewen Cameron is a young Highland chieftain and ardent Jacobite, eager to fight for the cause of Bonnie Prince Charlie. They first meet in the early days of the Rising when Ewen beats Keith in a swordfight and takes him prisoner, after which Keith is pleasantly surprised by both Ewen's gentlemanly hospitality and his good looks. Later they meet again, and history, plot and emotions all get a bit more dramatic.

It's a beautifully written book; the historical detail is wide-ranging and meticulous; the descriptions of place and scenery are gorgeous; the hints of the supernatural are intriguing; but the most important thing is Ewen and Keith's enemies-to-friends relationship, and the conflicts of loyalty, the complicated tangles of gentlemanly honour and duty and—most important of all—the oodles and oodles of dramatic hurt/comfort it involves as the plot progresses.

The Flight of the Heron is in the public domain in most countries; it's available as a free ebook and a free audiobook, and paper copies are widely available in libraries and second-hand bookshops.

The read-through will cover about two chapters a week; I'm planning to put up the first discussion post, in which we'll read the Prologue, on 25/26 September, and I'll link the posts here. Whether you're already a fan or would like to read it for the first time, I'm hoping this will be a good opportunity to discuss and appreciate this lovely book. :)

From the official Smithsonian website
Over the centuries, the dramatic life of Marie Antoinette has continued to fascinate. Austrian born, she was just 15 when she arrived in France in 1770, fated to become its last queen. It’s questionable that she uttered “let them eat cake” when told peasants were starving. But she famously sported towering hairdos and enjoyed spending lavishly on frippery. However, she was also a committed patron of artists and composers. Her innovative commissions at Versailles include furniture, decorative objects, paintings, and beautifully staged interior design. Thirty portraits of Marie-Antoinette by her friend, the famous artist Elisabeth Vigé-Lebrun, still decorate the palace walls.

I did some analysis of the use of contractions in The Flight of the Heron, a historical novel written in the 1920s and set in the 1740s, including some comparisons with other books written in both those periods. The results may be of interest in terms of what we mean by 'period style' in historical fiction!

Did you like Les Miserables but think it needed even more melodrama? Do (overly) principled characters like Enjolras and Javert turn you on? Do you think the historical Marat was actually a vampire?

If so, you may enjoy "Quatrevingt-Treize," a novel about the French Revolution. It's shorter than Les Mis, but features similar digressions and wall-of-texts. One of the recurring themes is "do the ends justify the means," not only in the sense of "can we do violent things to achieve good" (possibly the goal of the revolution) but the flip side of "what if doing a good thing has a bad consequence?"
It's set in the year 1793, and divided into three parts. The first section is about the aftermath of a sea battle carrying a ~mysterious person~ (there's a lot of "and then an old man who is totally the old man from three chapters ago showed up," in the Les Mis vein). The second section is set in Paris and features Hugo's monologues about why the revolution was great, including dialogue from Robespierre, Danton, and Marat.

"How old are you, Danton? Thirty-four years. How old are you, Robespierre? Thirty-three. Well, as for me, I have always been alive; I am suffering humanity, I am six thousand years old." - Marat the eternal

The last part involves the clash between the "idealistic" and "fatalistic" elements of the Revolution as the Parisian troops fight in La Vendee.

Content warnings: oooh boy, there is a lot. First of all, there are Hugo's author tracts which are kind of weird about women (mothers are described as animalistic in their love for their children, which has some positive aspects but is basically dehumanizing) and rural people/peasants (they're so supersititious, they need the central government to come enlighten them!) Lots of violence and death. Hints of offscreen sexual violence (nothing graphic). Spoilery note:

It's available in the public domain, there's a 1900 translation on Wikisource!

PS forgot to mention, it passes the Bechdel Test in the prologue! ...and probably not again.

Below are my favorite historical fics from Yuletide. One of them was my gift ♥

Fiat Justitia on AO3
Creator: Selena
Rating: Teen and Up
Word Count: 10,924
Characters/Pairings: 18th Century Frederician RPF (Frederick the Great & Wilhelmine, Frederick the Great/Hans)
Notes/Warnings: Both of the main characters are dealing with grief. Also, past filicide.
Summary: August 1730: Crown Prince Friedrich attempts to flee his abusive father and dies. His lover, Hans Hermann von Katte, escapes with Friedrich's sister Wilhelmine. Come what may, Wilhelmine is determined to avenge her brother...

Why I'm reccing it: I knew nothing about this time period before reading. This is a detailed 1700s what-if with a righteous, angry, and complex female main character, political intrigue, and a wonderful developing friendship. Plus, there is a meaningful exploration of grief and the relationship between a brother and sister.

Characters/Pairings: Turn (TV 2014), Benjamin Tallmadge/Caleb Brewster
Notes/Warnings: PTSD symptoms at the beginning
Summary: A Christmas party at Mount Vernon finds Ben and Caleb in the cups and in their feelings.

Why I'm reccing it: Really wonderful 1700s party details, and drunk Ben and Caleb! Singing and dancing and getting flirty! This fic gives me all the romantic winter vibes.

L’homme qu’il n’aurait pas quitté on AO3
Creator: iberiandoctor
Rating: Mature
Word Count: 3,761
Characters/Pairings: 19th Century France RPF, Jacques-Antoine Manuel/Pierre-Jean de Béranger
Noes/Warnings: Discussions and References to War-related violence
Summary: The veteran soldier during the Three Glorious Days, and that which his devoted chansonnier— living in their quiet retreat — would have remarked upon at his side on the battlefield of power.

Why I'm reccing it: I was not familiar with either figure before reading, but I loved the contrast between the two of them and the interesting discussions about the revolution (and I learned some new things while reading). The cozy and steadfast m/m love was really lovely to read as well.
