Just a note to let people know that I'm going to step down as [community profile] historium mod. [personal profile] dimity_blue and [personal profile] auroracloud will continue & everything (barring the newsletter) will carry on as usual.

It's been fun & thanks to everyone for sharing stuff & making [community profile] historium a reality. I hope it continues to be useful to people. (And I'll still be around for time to time as a member.)

If anyone is going to miss the newsletter, for fannish events & fests most things were farmed from [community profile] fandomcalendar anyway. For the rest, the reading list I used exists here, if it helps: https://historium-mod.dreamwidth.org/read

If you've got news/links/fanworks/events etc. to bring to [community profile] historium's attention, you can post them here directly.

This community is intended as a central community for all historical fandoms, both fictional and RPF. Welcome!

This is a place for posting and linking to any historical fic, icons, art, links, recs, reviews, meta, news, fanworks of any type, useful resources, discussion, community & event promos. If it's to do with a historical fandom, whether RPF or fictional, then it's welcome here. For fanworks, all ratings are fine.

As 'history' is a very wide fandom, this community is also intended to help people find like-minded souls and gauge interest in setting up more specific communities/friending etc. (but it's always fine to interact here). It's also a place for historical fandoms too small/obscure to have their own spaces.

If you're new to Dreamwidth, you can find a collection of helpful welcome & how-to posts here.

Our current [community profile] historium challenge is now closed! However, should anyone pick up any new fandoms thanks to people's efforts in posting Fandom Promos here, please do feel free to still get back to the original poster if you want to.

[community profile] historium is always open for new Fandom promos so if you're (like me) still working on a Manifesto from the last-but-one challenge, it's never too late to post it, and we will probably re-run this challenge some time.

And, of course, all members are welcome to post any news, links, discussion, fanworks, reviews, events etc. that they feel are relevant here at any time. (If you have questions, check out the sticky for guidelines or ask a mod - you can comment there or here or PM one of us.)

Meanwhile, my co-mods [personal profile] dimity_blue and [personal profile] auroracloud are plotting our next challenge even as I type! It should be something a little bit more laid back and accessible, I think - but I'll leave that to them to explain! Watch this space...

Just a reminder that we have the latest challenge going on at [community profile] historium to pick up a new fandom, running until June 30th.

You can check out what's been promoted in our fandom promo tag, post a new fandom promo (or manifesto) yourself (the comm is always open for them).

Plus, as the more fandoms there are to choose from, the more people will be able to play, you can also promote your fandom in a comment at the fandom promo post. (Feel free to chat about fandoms in the promo post, too!)

There's no hurry, but I thought it might have got rather lost in the sudden turn of events everywhere! ♥

[personal profile] thisbluespirit
Our latest challenge is to pick up a fandom, and while you can already find several fandoms via our fandom promo tag, more is good, yes?

So, here's an extra place to share some of the historical fandoms we love! Our definition is fairly wide and includes things that may contain supernatural elements, contemporary material that is now historical, RPF and fiction, and our cut-off date is fifty years ago (1970). Fandoms may be as obscure (or not) as you wish. (Please - no bashing of anyone or their fandoms in this post.)

Here's a template to use, with c+p text below in the box:

Fandom:
Historical Period:
Content Notes/Warnings:
What it is/what’s so great about it:
Where to find it:

Share your fandoms!

[personal profile] thisbluespirit
As things seem to get ever more depressing around us, here's a challenge where we can try and maybe cheer each other up a little!

Thank you so much to everyone who posted a fandom promo for our last challenge! It is now (belatedly) officially closed, but fandom promos are always welcome here - and any that have posted here (whether before or since the previous challenge as well as specifically for it) will be valid for our current challenge.

You can find them all by checking out our fandom promo tag.

Promos made for the previous challenge:

The Pacific by [personal profile] thrillingdetectivetales
Transparent (TV) by [personal profile] duskpeterson
The Queen's Thief by [personal profile] duskpeterson
Nero Wolfe by [personal profile] delphi
House of Five Leaves | Sarai-ya Goyō by [personal profile] delphi
Desert Peach by [personal profile] sailorkitty

The rules of our next challenge are simple - try out one of the recommended new-to-you fandoms and then create something for it (or generally respond to it). What that might be is pretty flexible, but it must be something positive! (No one is obliged to pretend to like anything they hated, but a rant or anything 100% negative will not qualify as completing this challenge.)

What if none of the fandoms promoted here are your cup of tea/available/in your preferred medium?

Don't panic! People should continue to post fandom promos (I still have at least one I've been meaning to finish), so keep an eye on the comm and the tag to see if something more to your taste crops up over the next three and half months.

I will also make a fandom promo post [community profile] yuletide style, so that more of us can chip in, particularly for shorter fandoms or just for those who prefer the lower visibilty of comments over posts. (The individual post promos will stand out more in the tag, so this won't be unfair to anyone who has taken the trouble to make one.)

Things you can do to complete the challenge, many of which don't necessarily involve actual fannishness for a thing (as we all know, that's not a feeling that can be guaranteed, even for things we enjoy):

* stop by the original post to discuss the fandom with the OP in the comments, letting them know you watched it (and hopefully enjoyed it/the bits you did enjoy/found interesting).

* create fic, art, vids, fanmixes etc.

* upload screen grabs or scans for the use of others

* picspam scenes, write reviews, meta, comparisons with similar sources

* rec lists

* graphics - gifsets, icons, text icons, headers, moodboards

* podfic someone's existing fic for the fandom

* lists of useful period resources for those creating fanworks for the fandom

* create a related challenge, fest, community etc.

In short, this is pretty low level and if there's something positive you can think of, from chatting to the OP to knitting or baking or the more standard types of fanworks, it should fulfil the challenge. Ask here or PM me if you want to double check any more outside the box ideas!

If you want to tie it in with other challenges, like bingos, [community profile] 100fandoms etc., [community profile] bethefirst, then feel free to do so (provided it's within the rules of the other challenge).

And a reminder again that the response does need to be generally positive.

Once you have made your response, post it or link to it in the original fandom promo post or comment so that the OP will see it.

You will need to also post/link directly to the comm in a post, and tag it with "type: historium challenges" so that I can see that it was posted for the challenge. (For anything like comment discussions etc. where that may not be appropriate, please just link back to this post instead so that I know you've completed the challenge.)

There will be banners for everyone who successfully takes part.

This challenge will close on June 30th 2020. Good luck everyone!

Our first Historium Bingo was posted here.

Has anyone completed any lines? If so, don't forget that banners are available for 1, 2, or 4 lines, plus for a whole card.

Let me know if you've earned a banner and which banner(s) you've earned, and I'll post your banner(s) so you can repost them with bragging rights.

ETA: If you haven't signed up for a card, feel free to do so at the above link. There's no time limit on completion, so take your time and have fun.

Welcome to the first fandom promotion/manifesto challenge of the Historium community! Since this is a community for all fandoms with a connection to history, many of us may have many fandoms the others haven't even heard of, or only have a vague idea of. In this challenge, we encourage you to tell other members of the community about your favourite fandoms, so that others may find fandoms they're interested in and you get more people to share the love with!

The challenge is running until January 15, 2020, but if someone feels like posting a manifesto/fandom promo after that, go ahead! The next three months are just when I'll be encouraging people to do this, and when we hope to get a nice collection of many different fandom manifestos/promos for our members and followers to browse.

We're keeping this pretty chill, so I'm not setting up a sign-up process to start with — but if many of you feel you would prefer to sign up for a particular date, and have me gently remind you if you haven't posted yours by then, let me know and I can set up a voluntary sign-up system. There's no limit to how many manifestos one person can post (unless someone starts flooding the community by posting every day or something, but I doubt it!). I more than one person wants to post about the same fandom, that's all right as well; you may have very different perspectives on it. But do try to keep at least a few weeks between them!

I'll try to post a few of my own in the coming weeks to so it'll be easier for you to get started as well, and see some examples of how to do it. Hopefully the first one will be up within a week. But you don't need to wait for me to post some of mine - you can start as soon as you want to. I'll also keep track of posted manifestos, so you can find them more easily later.

I'm providing a possible template for your manifesto, which I've adapted from [community profile] shipmanifestos. As I said, we're keeping things chill, so you don't have to adhere to this format if you prefer to structure your post differently. Feel free to adapt the format if you like, to add categories you need, or to make it simpler. But even if you change the format or use a different one, please make sure you at least include information on the fandom, its connection to history, and any content warnings.

If anything I've written in the template seems unclear to you, or you find errors in it, please let me know in the comments!

After you've hopefully found some new fandoms via other people's manifestos, you can check out the comment fic challenge again to see if you now can write for more prompts than before! And you can always keep posting fills for the bingo challenge (that reminds me, I need to get on with mine…).

Templates for posting )

* Firstly, head's up that the vidding exchange [community profile] equinox_exchange has gone live and as this time round the theme was "costume party" (i.e. costume dramas) pretty much everything in it should be relevant to our interests in some way, so check out all the vids and share the love!

* Also for anyone who was going to add bookmarks to our AO3 Collection but got stymied by the fact that all AO3 bookmarks temporarily vanished in a code push, worry not, they're all back. Feel free to go add some of the good things you've found around and about. You can use the external bookmarks option to add works hosted elsewhere, too. (Someone also asked about self-recs, which is a good point. The collection is primarily for general recs, and you can always pimp your own fic here on the comm itself, even if it's old. That said, if anyone wants to add any specific pieces of their own that they are particularly proud of or feel are too easily overlooked, feel free to do so.)
thisbluespirit: (films)
[personal profile] thisbluespirit
Since we have an AO3 Collection now, I thought it'd be worth highlighting the Bookmarks function it gives us.

If any comm members who use bookmarks on AO3 want to add relevant historical works to the Historium bookmarks collection, please do so. Together we can hopefully make a really useful resource for finding good historical fanworks on the archive.

If you follow the link, you can see I've added a random handful of works as an example. All you need to do to share existing bookmarks is to click on "Add to Collection" then type in "Historium" and the thing is done! If you're making a new bookmark to add, do so as usual, but again, type "Historium" in the space for collections. You can also add external bookmarks.

Our usual (loose) definitions of historical apply and works of all ratings/ship types etc are fine.

Add reccing blurbs and useful tags & mark it as a rec or not as you please (although obviously those things are good). But if it's been bookmarked in the collection here we'll take it that a Historium member thought it was well worth a look.

Have fun!

Just a modly note to let people know what's going on at [community profile] historium now that autumn is here in the northern hemisphere.

* Time for a new seasonal challenge! This will be a Fandom Promo/Manifesto challenge. [personal profile] auroracloud is running it, so look out for the upcoming post with all the details! Share all your fandoms (whether lesser known or not) with the rest of us history-loving souls here.

One additional note worth bearing in mind is that our next challenge (starting in 2020) will be to try and pick up and hopefully even create something for one of the fandoms in our fandom promo tag (but more about that and what it entails in the New Year).

* If you're still working your way through your Bingo Card and not ready to stop yet, never fear. There are no deadlines for completion, so just carry on and keep posting things here and/or to our Collection on AO3. Just remember to go back to the original post to let [personal profile] dimity_blue know when you're done.

* Newsletters should resume soon. If anything has started up over the summer that ought to be added to our watchlist, please let me know.

If you have any other queries or comments, please feel free to use this post to ask.

And, as ever, please don't hesitate to post anything of relevance directly to the comm (and just ask a mod if you have any doubts about what that is). Any member is welcome to start discussions, requests, fanworks or promote events and fandoms etc. etc at any time. It's what we're here for - the challenges and other bits and pieces are just the icing on the cake.
thisbluespirit: (writing)
[personal profile] thisbluespirit
Because we have one now! You can find [community profile] historium's AO3 Collection here. If you want to post anything created for any of our community challenges here, please do so. Ditto anything ever inspired by or prompted by community interaction or discussion.

As we're not quite busy enough to warrant sub-collections for each individual activity, if you want to distinguish between specific challenges, when posting your work simply put a tag such as "Historium Commentfest" or "Historium Bingo" into the additional tags field.

Anyone who wrote for the commentfest and would like to add their works to the collection, just edit the work in question and you should be able to add "historium" in the collection field.

Thanks!

Roll up, roll up for the first Historium Bingo!

The rules are simple:
Comment here leaving the type of card you want (gen vs. romance), your chosen fandom, and favourite character(s) from that fandom. I can PM a link to your card if you like, otherwise I'll post it in reply to your comment. Please say if you would prefer a PM with a link.

Fill in your squares any way you like - fic, icons, poetry, art, vids, screencaps, meta, crafts... Anything goes! There are no requirements as to size - short drabbles, long epics, all are welcome. All that's needed is for the work to be complete.

Post links to your fabulous work and apply for a banner. Banners are for 1 line, 2 lines, 4 lines, and full cards. There's no time limit either, so take as long as you need.

ETA: You may use multiple fandoms for your card, if you wish. The card background picture will be from one fandom of your choice or be a non-specific image (books, a globe, a sand glass, etc.) if you prefer.

Another edit: There's now a Historium collection on AO3 to make it easier for you to impress people.

Just a head's up that the [community profile] historium round up will be on hiatus for the summer!

Don't forget that [community profile] despatches already exists for all your Age of Sail needs, and if you want to keep an eye on what's going on in the historically fannish world, you can always look at our reading list in the meantime: https://historium-mod.dreamwidth.org/read

Also, apologies for the delay in the next community challenge - all three of the mods had simultaneous health issues. However, I hope the next will be posted soon, and certainly I shall be running another in the autumn, whatever else happens. (And we are all still around! Please continue to use the comm as much as you wish.)
thisbluespirit: (reading)
[personal profile] thisbluespirit
As I said in my last, the mods have been deciding what to do re. some of the members' suggestions about comm activities.

Obviously, the main purpose of the community is to act as noticeboard/meeting place for everyone in any historical fandom who wants to use it, so regardless of whatever bonus challenges or events we may run, please keep on posting links, fanworks, recs, discussion posts, fandom promos, community promos etc. etc.

* We now have a sticky post for Useful Resources. Any such links anyone posts to the comm will be added to the main list, or you can comment to that post directly to add something.

* I'm also tentatively trying a rough sort of newsletter/round-up, the first edition of which is here. If you have any community or site we should be keeping an eye on, please let us know at the most recent edition. (We have an account for watching relevant comms, so if you see [personal profile] historium_mod about, that's what it is.)

* We now have a outline for seasonal challenges & bonus events. The first of these will be a history commentfest, which will go up over the weekend - start thinking of your prompts now!

For April-August, [personal profile] auroracloud will be running a fandom manifesto (or promo) challenge, while [personal profile] dimity_blue will be coming up with some extra, smaller fun challenges in between (most likely monthly, or every other month).

(The Sep-Dec challenge will most likely be to pick up a promoted fandom, but obviously that will depend on how the previous challenge goes, but we have alternate ideas - more on that when we get to the time.)

Hopefully, this should be the last such admin update from me (at least for a fair while), but you can always drop a comment on the Intro post sticky or PM a mod if you have any questions or suggestions at any time.

And so, as you were! As I said before, a community is its members, not its mods, so keep on making use of [community profile] historium & we hope any modly extras prove to be useful and fun.
thisbluespirit: (history)
[personal profile] thisbluespirit
Happy New Year! Apologies that I haven't been properly around as mod for the past few weeks, but I'm back now. (And also that, to add to the confusion, I changed my name in the meantime, but this is still lost_spook, your original mod of this comm and not an impostor. Er. Honest!)

Anyway, some updates etc.:

* I have set the community default to "is suitable for everyone", which should solve the problem for people who were seeing every entry as cut when logged out. This does mean that if you do post NSFW material here (which is welcome!), you'll need to alter the Age restriction box on your individual post to whatever you deem most appropriate. (As most fanworks tend to be linked from here rather than posted directly, I shouldn't think this will affect many posts in any case).

* On a similar note, I originally chose the layout 'Mobility' as it was said to be good for mobile users, but it was unfortunately minus the navigation bar making it hard for people to post to and join the comm, which is pretty fundamental, so I changed it to this one. If any of the other free layouts work better for mobile users and still have the grey navigation bar at the top, let me know, and I'll see if we can use that instead.

* We now have a third mod, [personal profile] dimity_blue as well as myself and [personal profile] auroracloud.

* I've been adding fandom tags etc as we go - please let me know if I have missed any or tagged anything incorrectly & I will do my best to fix it. I have been trying to keep everything other than fandom tags to a minimum so that we avoid hitting the Dreamwidth max tags limit too soon, but again, let me know if there's something important I've missed or messed up.

* Suggestions for the community (from the introductory post) are:

- commentfest/promptfest/fic exchange/ficathon
- Resources post(s)
- themed challenges
- fandom manifestos/pimping
- linkspams/round up posts/newsletters

The good news is that most of these are not only great ideas, but will definitely happen here! A resources post will follow presently. The challenges idea could combine well with the other suggestions in any case.

It wouldn't be realistic to try and do a regular linkspam/newsletter for such a wide topic as 'all history' but any relevant linkspams, recs and individual links posts from members are very welcome here - and if anybody sets up any further speciifc newsletters or regular round ups on a topic, do please pimp there here, or use this as a base.

Plus, if you're into the Age of Sail era, there is already [community profile] despatches, the newsletter for that period & fandoms. There's also [community profile] archaeology_weekly, too, on the non-fannish side.

Other than that - please continue to use the community for fanwork announcements, pimping events, sharing news & links, promoting your historical fandoms, discussion posts, gauging interest on more specific comms or anything else you can think of that's on topic for [community profile] historium. A community, essentially, is its members, so this is your space - please feel free to use it!

Periods/areas of interest:
Historical Fandoms:
Got any more historical comms we've missed?
Any other comms/events/ideas you'd like to see here?

Rules & Guidelines
* Be civil to other members - discussion and debate is great, but no trolling, spamming, re-enacting of old time wars in any posts/comments, and absolutely no racism or hatespeech to be used directly against anyone.

* Please put any large (or multiple) graphics, fic, long posts, spoilers, multiple embeds & anything NSFW etc. under a cut. If you are posting content that refers to any more sensitive or problematic areas of history, you must put this behind a cut or post via a link + appropriate content notes/warnings. (To make a cut, in html use: [cut text="More under here etc."], replacing [] with < and >.)

(The community display default is 'suitable for all ages' but it is fine to post NSFW material - just alter the Age Restriction box when you post to 'discretion' or '18+' if you are posting the content to the comm rather than linking to AO3 or a personal journal etc. If there is nothing adult in the post itself, this isn't necessary.)

* Content posted to this community needs to be relevant to history and fandom in some way. It doesn't have to be long, or fanworks only - links, reviews, discussion, resources, commentfests & challenges, news, community promos, and questions etc. are all welcome. Sensitive and difficult content will at times be inevitable given the nature of history, and we have no banned period/topics currently, but members must use cut/links and warnings (or clearly choose not to warn) when posting such content to allow everyone to navigate the comm safely.

However, any active promotion of or apologism for offensive ideologies etc. is of course not allowed. The mods reserve the right to remove material or ban users if we have reason to believe they are abusing content guidelines, trolling, or harrassing anyone. Please contact us if you feel this is the case. (Anon commenting is on here, or you can PM a mod.) We may also review these guidelines at any time.

* Anon commenting is on, but you can adjust comment settings for each individual post to allow screening or disable comments as you prefer.

* The cut-off point definition of history (for the purposes of this comm only!) is 50 years prior to the date of posting, but we realise this always a grey area.

* History vs mythology is another fine line, so please just use your best judgement; ditto historically-set fantasy but most will be fine as long as they're set in an recognisable historical period.

If you're unsure your content 'counts' in any way, you can ask here or PM a mod, but in general the answer will be yes!

* It's fine to post here even if there's a specific era or fandom community! (If any one fandom with its own comm starts flooding the comm, we may temporarily ask people not to cross-post to both.)

* When posting fanworks, please use some kind of header above the cut or link - the AO3 share feature is great, or you can c+p the below (which includes optional coding for links/cuts), but anything similar will do fine:

* Tagging: this exists to find content on the comm and is currently mod-only for creation of tags, but any member may add existing tags to their post. If you would like to request any particular tags to be made for any reason, please contact a mod.

There is an Historium AO3 Collection that you can use for any works created specifically for community challenges or in any way inspired by any discussion/interaction etc. here.

Cut for promotional banner coding )

Masterlist of Historical Communities (WIP) )

We also have a growing Useful Resources Post. (To add links etc., please comment on that post, or post directly to the community.)

If you have any other questions, please ask them in the comments here, or PM a mod.
