Announcement & Call for Contributions:

Danse Macabre Issue No. 1

Danse Macabre logo by Stamina

It is our pleasure to announce the launch of a new phan zine, a celebration of Phantom of the Opera in its rich variety!

The theme for this first issue is PotO in all its incarnations, from Gaston Leroux to the film and stage versions, with the focus on its dark and twisted aspects.

For this first issue, we ask for Erik/Christine and tangential pairings, as well as gen content. We will welcome other pairings in future issues.

We are looking forward to your contributions: fiction (limit 10K words), poetry, meta (limit 4K words), and art (both traditional and digital, colour or b/w).

Submission guidelines:

  • Explore the darkness of PotO!
  • Taboo and outrageous topics are welcome, as are horror & violence, angst and drama, dark romance, character studies, explicit sexual content; however, while NSFW is of course allowed, it is not a requirement.
  • For this issue, we will not accept modern AUs. Please no Real Person Fiction (actors). No extreme underage characters (under 14).
  • Please submit your artwork as hi-res files (preferably .png / lossless compression) suitable for high-quality print. If you want to send in traditional artwork as master, please contact us to discuss the details. If you are submitting artwork especially for cover consideration, please mark it as such.
  • Multiple entries are allowed both for writing and art. Depending on space and the number of contributions, we may not be able to include all of them. We give priority to contributions that have not been published in print or on the internet before, as well as older works that are out-of-print. Authors and artists may post their works online 9 months after the zine’s publication date. Each contributor receives a trib copy of the published zine.

We strive to give our very best, both in editorial and layout work. However, we ask you to have your work beta-read before you submit it.

“Danse Macabre" is first and foremost a print zine. We will, however, also offer a digital version for phans who prefer ebooks or a pdf.

This is a fan project featuring transformative works, and not for profit — all proceeds will go into covering the costs of production.

Editors: Larissa Bernstein (AO3), Cat Corsair (AO3).
Factotum: Lillian.

Contact for submissions and enquiries: dansemacabre@isispress.co.uk

Deadline (hard) for submissions: 31 December, 2021.

regshoe: A grey heron in flight over water (Heron)

Over the next few months I'll be hosting a read-along of The Flight of the Heron by D. K. Broster on my journal. You're invited to join in!

Published in 1925, The Flight of the Heron is a historical novel set in Scotland during the Jacobite Rising of 1745. Keith Windham is an English army officer annoyed at being sent to such a barbaric, out-of-the-way place as the Scottish Highlands; Ewen Cameron is a young Highland chieftain and ardent Jacobite, eager to fight for the cause of Bonnie Prince Charlie. They first meet in the early days of the Rising when Ewen beats Keith in a swordfight and takes him prisoner, after which Keith is pleasantly surprised by both Ewen's gentlemanly hospitality and his good looks. Later they meet again, and history, plot and emotions all get a bit more dramatic.

It's a beautifully written book; the historical detail is wide-ranging and meticulous; the descriptions of place and scenery are gorgeous; the hints of the supernatural are intriguing; but the most important thing is Ewen and Keith's enemies-to-friends relationship, and the conflicts of loyalty, the complicated tangles of gentlemanly honour and duty and—most important of all—the oodles and oodles of dramatic hurt/comfort it involves as the plot progresses.

The Flight of the Heron is in the public domain in most countries; it's available as a free ebook and a free audiobook, and paper copies are widely available in libraries and second-hand bookshops.

The read-through will cover about two chapters a week; I'm planning to put up the first discussion post, in which we'll read the Prologue, on 25/26 September, and I'll link the posts here. Whether you're already a fan or would like to read it for the first time, I'm hoping this will be a good opportunity to discuss and appreciate this lovely book. :)

The library's previous scope, 1900-1940, focusing on English fandoms, was too narrow to be useful to many people. To that end, the library is being expanded to focus on 1840-1945, non-fandom specific, including origfic.

And hit up Ask The Librarian for any questions!  The mod has limited knowledge about history before 1900, so please post entries regarding earlier times. Everyone will appreciate it.

What Ho! A Library!

There are entries on slang, smut, aristocracy, homosexual and lesbian history, with links to articles and YouTube videos.

At [community profile] what_ho_library , the entry "What Is An Edwardian Word For Penis?" has been updated with British and American timelines of slang for:

Breasts
Commercial Sex
Masturbation
Arse (Down And Dirty)
Defection and Urination

The Timeline slider goes from 1850-present, so it works for just about every fandom, including Jane Austen if you want to get naughty.

At [community profile] give_satisfaction , activity will resume over the holidays.

Happy Holidays!

There is a new entry in [community profile] what_ho_library , "Below Stairs: Valets, Maids, And Other Domestic Servants".

It is a collection of links to historical resources about all aspects of servant life in the early 20th century England. Sources include Wikipedia, Jane Austen's World, A Victorian, Mrs. Beeton's Guide To Household Management, and many more.

Including [personal profile] quaffanddoff 's fic, Jackpot, which besides being an excellent fic, has detailed information of a servant's wages and other expenses.

Although it is mostly for Jeeves And Wooster fandom writers, it is also helpful to all writers of historical fic set in 1900-1930. More entries will be forthcoming on a variety of topics. If anyone has one to suggest, please leave it in the comments below.

Monthly Challenge/Prompt FIll

There will be no monthly challenge this summer. In the meantime, glance through the prompts, read the fills, enjoy all of the bounteous creativity.

[personal profile] alivehawk1701 posted a multichapter fic, None The Wooster
Summary:
In a somewhat darker hue, we look at how intensely lonely Bertie actually is and what fulfillment could come by just being honest with himself. The only question is how will Jeeves, who is bound by his professional obligations, react to a chance taken. What's more, when Aunt Agatha has a new proposition for marriage, what will they both do and what dangers await . . .

Reference Community

A sister community, as yet unnamed, will be created. It will be a historical reference library, with an emphasis on sex, of course. Also a post to ask questions, essays on Wodehouse (some by me but others as well), history from 1910-1940, and anything else that seems appropriate. I can't think of a name for it. Once you choose a name for a community, that's it. I've been having some trouble coming up with one.

It's a new decade and already things are pretty awful!

Over at [community profile] give_satisfaction , the P.G. Wodehouse kink meme, there's a poll asking what members and potential members want going forward. New posts? New topics? Paper dolls?

There's a lot of ideas, so check it out. I hope Jeeves and Wooster fans come over!

As many of you know, Yahoo Groups is shutting down its archives.

If you are a member of Yahoo Groups: As I say in that linked post, the most important thing you can do is download your lists at Yahoo Groups and pass them on to OTW. The second most important thing you can do is let me know the URLs of lists that should be saved. I'll pass on that info to the group that's archiving right now. We're under a tight deadline, because Yahoo is in the process of restricting our ability to join groups and archive them. Rare fandoms - i.e. most historical fandoms - are most at risk of being lost.

You can doublecheck here whether lists have already been added.

And you can post your info over at our Discord chat channel - that will get the info quickest to the volunteers.

Our first Historium Bingo was posted here.

Has anyone completed any lines? If so, don't forget that banners are available for 1, 2, or 4 lines, plus for a whole card.

Let me know if you've earned a banner and which banner(s) you've earned, and I'll post your banner(s) so you can repost them with bragging rights.

ETA: If you haven't signed up for a card, feel free to do so at the above link. There's no time limit on completion, so take your time and have fun.

Because we have one now! You can find [community profile] historium's AO3 Collection here. If you want to post anything created for any of our community challenges here, please do so. Ditto anything ever inspired by or prompted by community interaction or discussion.

As we're not quite busy enough to warrant sub-collections for each individual activity, if you want to distinguish between specific challenges, when posting your work simply put a tag such as "Historium Commentfest" or "Historium Bingo" into the additional tags field.

Anyone who wrote for the commentfest and would like to add their works to the collection, just edit the work in question and you should be able to add "historium" in the collection field.

Thanks!

Roll up, roll up for the first Historium Bingo!

The rules are simple:
Comment here leaving the type of card you want (gen vs. romance), your chosen fandom, and favourite character(s) from that fandom. I can PM a link to your card if you like, otherwise I'll post it in reply to your comment. Please say if you would prefer a PM with a link.

Fill in your squares any way you like - fic, icons, poetry, art, vids, screencaps, meta, crafts... Anything goes! There are no requirements as to size - short drabbles, long epics, all are welcome. All that's needed is for the work to be complete.

Post links to your fabulous work and apply for a banner. Banners are for 1 line, 2 lines, 4 lines, and full cards. There's no time limit either, so take as long as you need.

ETA: You may use multiple fandoms for your card, if you wish. The card background picture will be from one fandom of your choice or be a non-specific image (books, a globe, a sand glass, etc.) if you prefer.

Another edit: There's now a Historium collection on AO3 to make it easier for you to impress people.

I imported my old [community profile] poldarks comm over from LJ - I'm happy to stay on as a sleeping co-mod (especially since I know a reasonable amount about the 1970s series and the books), but if anyone is interested in taking it over, they are welcome.

(But in any case people are welcome to join and make use of it anyway!)

So, the demo for a new dating visual novel game set in the Victorian era has just arrived, in case anyone's interested to try it out! :)

It's called Vicboys and it's still in development, but the art looks pretty nice, and I enjoyed the demo, even as short as it was!

It can be checked out right here!
