Title: Alberto mio
Rating: NC-17 / Mature
Word Count/size/length: 7.115
Characters: Albrecht Dürer, Cesare Borgia, Micheletto da Corella, Giorgione da Castelfranco, Giovanni Bellini and assorted others
Pairings: Albrecht Dürer/Cesare Borgia, Cesare Borgia/Michelotto da Corella (hinted)
Warnings: dub-con, violence
Summary: A provocation on piazza San Marco, a brawl in a Venetian pub - where will it ever end? In the fraught autumn of 1494, some people will learn a lot about themselves: discover new weaknesses, new strengths, and (possibly) new positions perspectives, too.
Author's Notes: There are quite a few historical incongruities which I can't be bothered to eradicate since they are the actual premises of this story (starting with the timing, because even if Albrecht *did* travel to Venice in the autumn of 1494, which isn't altogether established, he would have been there around October which, for the purposes of Cesare's (entirely fictional, of course) embassy, would have been too late. More in the footnotes at the end.

There are many brilliant lines, but if the following doesn't catch you I can't help you. :D

The church really needs reform, he thinks for all of one fleeting moment, if he can have the Cardinal of Valencia squirming and kicking underneath him. But such ideas evaporate as their tangle tightens and their bodies dissolve into one, or none, or nothing at all.

Link: You can read this magnificent thing over at the author's DW journal (where I humbly contributed an outtake in the comments, ahem) or over at their AO3 page!

New member [personal profile] alivehawk1701 has posted a lovely new story, "None The Wooster". Welcome this writer to our lovely little fandom!

None The Wooster

Summary: From Jeeves' POV and, in a somewhat darker hue, we look at how intensely lonely Bertie actually is and what fulfillment could come by just being honest with himself. The only question is how will Jeeves, who is bound by his professional obligations, react to a chance taken. What's more, when Aunt Agatha has a new proposition for marriage, what will they both do and what dangers await . . .

Sexy and funny with a great Bertie voice. I get the impression it's a WIP.

Below are my favorite historical fics from Yuletide. One of them was my gift ♥

Fiat Justitia on AO3
Creator: Selena
Rating: Teen and Up
Word Count: 10,924
Characters/Pairings: 18th Century Frederician RPF (Frederick the Great & Wilhelmine, Frederick the Great/Hans)
Notes/Warnings: Both of the main characters are dealing with grief. Also, past filicide.
Summary: August 1730: Crown Prince Friedrich attempts to flee his abusive father and dies. His lover, Hans Hermann von Katte, escapes with Friedrich's sister Wilhelmine. Come what may, Wilhelmine is determined to avenge her brother...

Why I'm reccing it: I knew nothing about this time period before reading. This is a detailed 1700s what-if with a righteous, angry, and complex female main character, political intrigue, and a wonderful developing friendship. Plus, there is a meaningful exploration of grief and the relationship between a brother and sister.

Allemande on AO3
Creator: Lucyemers
Rating: Teen and Up
Word Count: 1,635
Characters/Pairings: Turn (TV 2014), Benjamin Tallmadge/Caleb Brewster
Notes/Warnings: PTSD symptoms at the beginning
Summary: A Christmas party at Mount Vernon finds Ben and Caleb in the cups and in their feelings.

Why I'm reccing it: Really wonderful 1700s party details, and drunk Ben and Caleb! Singing and dancing and getting flirty! This fic gives me all the romantic winter vibes.
---

L’homme qu’il n’aurait pas quitté on AO3
Creator: iberiandoctor
Rating: Mature
Word Count: 3,761
Characters/Pairings: 19th Century France RPF, Jacques-Antoine Manuel/Pierre-Jean de Béranger
Noes/Warnings: Discussions and References to War-related violence
Summary: The veteran soldier during the Three Glorious Days, and that which his devoted chansonnier— living in their quiet retreat — would have remarked upon at his side on the battlefield of power.

Why I'm reccing it: I was not familiar with either figure before reading, but I loved the contrast between the two of them and the interesting discussions about the revolution (and I learned some new things while reading). The cozy and steadfast m/m love was really lovely to read as well.

Well, this is a Friday rather than a Thursday, but I was too tired to do recs when I got home yesterday, but thought it a lovely idea to do recs, anyway. I'll do a few on a theme: historical fics with f/f romances (or hints of romance). All but one of these (the last) have been gift fics to me in fairly recent exchanges, because I've just had that much luck with my exchange gifts. They're all at least a few months old, but I've been meaning to rec them for a while, because they deserve it.

By the author of "Laura's Dilemma" (2901 words) by El Staplador
Fandom: Original Work
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Original Female Character/Original Female Character, Regency Debutante/Her Sister's Governess
Characters: Original Female Character(s)
Additional Tags: Regency, Books, Gossip, Class Differences, Age Difference, Secret Identity, Reference to illness suffered by child
Summary: There was always a fire in the schoolroom grate, even when she came home long after midnight. And Miss Cole was always there. Sometimes she would be turning over the pages of a novel (Maria was almost sure it was a novel); sometimes writing a letter; sometimes she would be dozing in the high-backed chair that had been Mamma's favourite when they lived in the country; but she would always be there when Maria looked in.

And Maria always looked in.

My comment: A lovely original historical story that reads delightfully like a regency novel except that it's about the love between two women.

An Example of Benevolent Selfishness (5724 words) by Alona
Fandom: Emma - Jane Austen
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jane Fairfax/Emma Woodhouse, Jane Fairfax & Emma Woodhouse
Characters: Emma Woodhouse, Jane Fairfax
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Developing Relationship
Summary:

A chance encounter between Emma and Jane leads to a drastic change in their relationship.

My comment: An incredibly beautiful canon divergence fic where Emma and Jane Fairfax become close much earlier, and develop a strong friendship - and perhaps more.

performance (1243 words) by frausorge
Fandom: Mansfield Park - Jane Austen
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Mary Crawford/Fanny Price
Characters: Fanny Price, Mary Crawford
Summary: Fanny began going more and more often to the Parsonage.

Another case of characters becoming closer in the story than they do in the original novel, this story beautifully uses Mary's harp playing to create a connection between Fanny and Mary. While that was a suggestion from my prompt, I really liked what the author did with it, as well as how the story subtly shows more to Mary Crawford than the narration of the book would have us believe.

To Be Fond of Dancing (888 words) by penna_nomen
Fandom: Emma - Jane Austen
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jane Fairfax/Emma Woodhouse
Characters: Jane Fairfax, Emma Woodhouse
Additional Tags: Romance, Dancing
Summary:Jane’s love for Emma has gone unrequited, until they share a dance.

This is set at a dance at the girls' school, where young women partner one another, and Jane and Emma succeed in finding a common ground.

Summary:

Anne brings all of her people together by sailing home to Nassau despite everything, and her sailing partners need to find a new way to navigate on land. It may be complicated and messy in places, but they all love her and do their best.

Black Sails is a queer-friendly, polyamory-friendly look at the golden age of piracy and this fic is a post-canon fix it of sorts written for Fandom Trumps Hate, for keenquing.
sylvaine: Dark-haired person with black eyes & white pupils. ([HP] feeling lucky)
[personal profile] sylvaine
Both of these are from the same Harry Potter epic, but I don't think you need the rest of the fics to understand and enjoy these - they're almost entirely populated by OCs and historical figures, and though magic certainly features a lot, the main points for me are the political intrigues of the 900s in Europe.

(Mods, this post could possibly use tags for f: harry potter and 10th century?)

People have been trying to set up a Reccing Thursday meme (like the Reading Wednesdays) and it suddenly occurred to me that we could do that here.

To start us off, here are the five most recent historical fanworks I've bookmarked (all excellent) - four historical RPF/historical RPF-based fiction (14th C & 15th C), and one Pride & Prejudice:

In myn herte have hem in reverence by [archiveofourown.org profile] brutti-ma-buoni (14th C/Katherine - Anya Seton)
(G, 1507 words. John of Gaunt/Katherine Swynford.) It is 1398 and history is about to take a different turn. A messenger arrives for the Duke of Lancaster. A choice is made.

Intriguing post-canon AU, beautifully done.

And trewe of love thise women were echoon by [archiveofourown.org profile] Lilliburlero (15th C/Shakespeare's Henry V)
(Not Rated (G), 463 words. Fluellen/Gower.) These entries were thought too recondite to include in Women in Late Medieval England and Wales: A Biographical Dictionary, eds Charlotte A. Dodd, Pamela Laredo Marlow, and Thomasine Merrick (Streweminster: Streweminster University Press, 2013). They are reproduced here in the interests of open access to research and scholarship.

I love a bit of metafiction and these historical biographical dictionary entries are lovely and much can be read between the lines.

Wrapt in a Woman's Hide by [archiveofourown.org profile] Gileonnen (15th C/Shakespeare's Henry VI)
(Teen, 1144 words. Richard III/Edward of Lancaster, George Plantagenet Duke of Clarence, Margaret of Anjou, Henry VI.) The youngest child of Richard of York is a daughter--and the women of York make good use of their marriages.

Brilliant AU of Shakespeare's Richard; it's an excellent and sharp piece that's got teeth.

past imperfect by [archiveofourown.org profile] fandomsruinedmylife (15thC/16thC)
(G, 2965 words. Henry VII/Elizabeth of York, Margaret Beaufort, Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Henry VIII, Mary I, Elizabeth I, Edward VI.)or, glimpses into eight worlds where history unfolded differently thanks to an accident of birth

What it says on the tin - a well written series of fascinating alternate history vignettes, looking at what might have happened had eight different figures of the Tudor era been a different gender. (Or the patriarchy sucks, as the author says.)

Five Sons Mr and Mrs Bennet Never Had by by [archiveofourown.org profile] biichan
(G, 3929 words. Elizabeth Bennet/Fitzwilliam Darcy, Caroline Bingley, Mary Bennet, George Wickham, Lydia Bennet, Kitty Bennet.) ...for, of course, they were to have a son. This son was to join in cutting off the entail, as soon as he should be of age... (A series of what-ifs exploring in turn the possibilities had any of the Bennet girls been born male.)

Great and enjoyable exploration of what would have happened had each of the Bennet sisters been boys in turn. It's really hard to even decide on a favourite segment.

(If several of these involve genderswapping, that's because I was making a rec set for a bingo square, hence that dominating my most recent bookmarks.)

What good historical fanfic, fanart, vids, podfic (etc. etc.) do you want to shout about?

For those who like books, I've posted a big list of recs for historical fiction on my journal here. The books are listed in chronological order for convenience.

Eras:
  • Alexander the Great
  • Roman Empire
  • Mongol Empire
  • 17th Century France
  • 19th Century
  • 1920s England
  • World War II Europe
  • 1950s and Modern Day.

There's quite a variety, so I'm sure there's something for everyone.

I've posted several history fandom-related things to my journal over the past couple of weeks, so I thought I would do a round-up post here in case they were of interest to others:

A review of The Favourite (2018). I finally saw The Favourite, and I loved and was fascinated by it. I highly recommend seeing it if you haven't already; if you have, come talk to me about it!

Reading Wednesday mini-reviews of two recently-published 18th century-related books: The Mermaid & Mrs. Hancock by Imogen Hermes Gowar, historical fiction set in 1780s England, and Tilar J. Mazzeo's biography of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton.

A Yuletide recs post. Five out of the six fandoms I list recs for are historical: The Awakening (2011), The Bedlam Stacks, Carol, Lord Peter Wimsey, and Lynes & Mathey.

And finally, the Yuletide treat I posted this year; Society of Gentlemen fic, Dominic/Silas, 2870 words.

Title: Schön und jung und stark (English; link goes to AO3)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Word Count: 2051
Characters: Albrecht Dürer, Agnes Frey, Willibald Pirckheimer, Hans Baldung Grien, Giorgione, Giovanni Bellini, Barbara Holper-Dürer, Lorenz Beheim
Pairings: Albrecht Dürer/Agnes Frey, Albrecht Dürer/Willibald Pirckheimer, Albrecht Dürer/Hans Baldung Grien, Albrecht Dürer/Giorgione
Notes/Warnings: nah, but you're welcome to point out triggers if you think so!
Summary: Being anything but a catalogue raisonné of Albrecht Dürer's great and varied career: 20 moments in time, 20 drabbles in silver pen and watercolour, in glib oils, hazy engravings and bold woodcuts.

I desperately want to share my Yuletide gift with anyone interested: it's written in English, despite the title, and be sure to click the accompanying links to the pictures in question. If you're even slightly fond of writing about historical sujet without all the bodice ripping and lofty gasping, and you're having a more than passing obsession for Hillary Mantel (like [personal profile] liriaen), then give this gem a try.
