Date: 2018-12-08 02:49 pm (UTC)Historical Fandoms: I really love ancient BBC historical dramas! I know I should work on this, but I love their Tudor trilogy Shadow of the Tower (my favourite, even though it is not the best), Elizabeth R, & The Six WIves of Henry VIII and a whole lot of others like Enemy at the Door (WWII, Occupation of the Channel Islands), Tenko (WWII, female prisoners of war in Japan), The Duchess of Duke Street (early 20th C hotel running) and The Onedin Line (19th C Liverpool shipping line shenanigans). My main fandom is Doctor Who, so I blame those Hartnell historicals for a lot.
I do watch some modern ones, though - I loved Ripper Street, and I stuck all the way through Downton Abbey, despite the ridiculous. I prefer 1970s Poldark and the books to the new one, though. I'm also a long time reader of classic lit and Georgette Heyer and golden age crime and probably many other things. I was a librarian, but I studied history at uni *mumble* years ago, and it's always been one of my main passions.
Got any more historical comms we've missed? As I made the list, no! I'll keep searching, though...
Any other comms/events/ideas you'd like to see here? As mod, you will hear about them when & if I do. I think a comment or promptfest or some sort of event like that might be fun at some point.

Date: 2018-12-08 10:36 pm (UTC)Periods/areas of interest: I would have to say I have a pretty general interest in history, probably with a little too much emphasis on American and British history. I have a definite interest in the World Wars and the Regency/Age of Sail though.
Historical Fandoms: Without Supernatural Elements: The Alienist, Band of Brothers, Black Sails, Downton Abbey, Dunkirk, Fury, The Great Gatsby, Hornblower, Jeeves & Wooster, King Arthur, Les Misérables, The Magnificent Seven, Master and Commander, The Pacific, Psmith, Vikings
With Supernatural Elements: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Agent Carter, Beauty and the Beast, Fantastic Beasts, The Mummy, Pirates of the Caribbean, Victor Frankenstein
Got any more historical comms we've missed? I learned about all the comms I know about from you so, I really couldn't say.
Any other comms/events/ideas you'd like to see here? I'm new at comms in general, so I am willing to follow your lead. :D

Got any more historical comms we've missed? No, I'm new to DW!

Date: 2018-12-09 09:27 am (UTC)Periods/areas of interest: Though I'm generally interested in a number of periods, my absolute love is Alexander Hamilton and John Laurens. I've written quite a number of fic involving them (separately or together) on AO3 at
and I mayyy believe the Victorian era to be extremely overrated as a period :PI'm also just really interested in queer history in general!Historical Fandoms: I like Hamilton, obviously, but I don't really write for it other than by drawing from the actors for modern AU fic (which I rarely write) and I basically don't read for it. I've just started watching through Black Sails, too! Fandoms I enjoy but am not really currently active in: Pirate of the Caribbean, Jeeves and Wooster, War and Peace, The Great Gatsby, Beauty and the Beast, Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, and Game of Thrones if that counts!
Got any more historical comms we've missed? Don't think so - I only just came back to DW and the historical RPF is new to me!

I'm new to Dreamwidth following the tumblr exodus, so I'm combing through comms and figuring out how it works. Excited to meet new people and check out some new discussions!

Date: 2018-12-10 09:29 pm (UTC)In the past few year's I've focused particularly on the 19th century history of Finland (my own country), in particular social and cultural history and microhistory, because I try to write historical fiction about that era. But it leads me to plenty of reading focused on other countries as well, because there isn't really enough available about Finland, so then I read on other countries and try to extrapolate, considering the differences. (Lots of interesting mental gymnastics there!)
I'm also particularly interested in queer history, women's history, and history of sciences, arts and culture as well as history of everyday life, across all eras and geographic areas. Biographies of female scientists are my catnip. I keep meaning to go beyond the Eurocentrism of much of my history, and to dive deeper into earlier eras.
Historical Fandoms: Lots of classics, e.g. Austen, L.M. Montgomery, Dumas's The Count of Monte Cristo. I'm currently a bit lacking in historical fiction / history adaptation fandoms - hoping to find some recommendations here! But I have several book fandoms of historical fantasy or sci-fi, including: Gail Carriger's steampunk/urban fantasy alternate 19th century series (The Parasol Protectorate series, the Custard Protocol series, the Finishing School series, and the associated novellas); Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell; Heather Rose Jones's Alpennia series; and Katherine Arden's Winternight trilogy.
Got any more historical comms we've missed? Not at the moment! Will let you know if I notice any.

Date: 2018-12-11 02:35 am (UTC)Historical Fandoms: I'm not actively in any historical fandoms right now (unless you count AskHistorians or my historical sewing), but I'm into Austen, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, early Downton Abbey, mid-twentieth-century musicals, and a lot of other things.
Got any more historical comms we've missed? Nope!
Any other comms/events/ideas you'd like to see here? I love fic exchanges (need deadlines to finish anything), would be nice to hold one sometime?

Date: 2018-12-12 05:14 am (UTC)Historical Fandoms: I'm primarily a Black Sails person; I also have strong feelings about Hamilton. I'm also very into a few somewhat more obscure book fandoms, especially for the Lord John series by Diana Gabaldon (mystery novels starring a gay British Army officer in mid-18th century London) and the Society of Gentlemen series by K.J. Charles (Regency m/m romance novels; my favorite features a radical bookseller and a Tory government official), as well as books that really can't be said to have fandoms at all, but that I love dearly: Golden Hill, by Francis Spufford (1740s New York, gorgeous writing, I can't say too much or I'd spoil it) and Life Mask, by Emma Donoghue (1790s lesbians, richly detailed and all the characters were real historical figures). I'm also getting into historical sewing. For WWI, I adore the Regeneration series by Pat Barker; I also like exploration of the fallout of WWI, and to that end I really enjoy things like the Lord Peter Wimsey series by Dorothy L. Sayers and Peaky Blinders.
Got any more historical comms we've missed? I'm brand-new to dw after the tumblr nsfw ban, so I'm just glad I stumbled upon this one.
Any other comms/events/ideas you'd like to see here? Looking at others' suggestions, I very much second promptfests and "promote your obscure historical fandom" posts (obviously, I have a lot of them). Linkspams/round-up posts would also be really interesting too, though I know that puts a lot of work on the mods.

Date: 2018-12-12 06:22 pm (UTC)I don't know if we could really do a regular links round up with such a wide topic (speaking for this mod at least!) but it'll always be open to any posts like that members (or mods) wish to make - and we'll definitely have to build up some resources posts between us, too. (I might need to wait for the New Year for that, but I certainly plan on trying to make ourselves useful as well as hopefully fun!)

Date: 2018-12-23 09:29 am (UTC)heh, indeed! And welcome to the comm!
I'd always had the impession that Attolia was pure fantasy, and Googling it again now, Wikipedia seems to agree with me - it's a fantasy world based on some ancient Greek stuff, but not Ancient GReek + magic? Does that sound right to you? (If so, I'll leave it off. I'm not entirely sure where the line lies here, but I think that's fairly on the other side, I think.)

Shakespeare's the big one here (specifically the histories), as is classic lit in general. I'm also a huge Hilary Mantel fan. Oh, and I blame watching The Lion In Winter at a formative age for Why I Like What I Like. I also watch a ton of costume dramas but I'm not super clued into what the fandoms are like.
Got any more historical comms we've missed?
Nah, completely new to Dreamwidth

Date: 2019-01-25 12:45 pm (UTC)Historical Fandoms: Love costume dramas, generally.
I see people are dividing by fantastic and non-fantastic, hmm. Fantastic: Agent Carter, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norell, Penny Dreadful, Zen Cho's Sorcerer to the Crown. Non-fantastic: Poldark, The Alienist, Black Sails, Sharpe, Jane Austen, Call the Midwife, The Bletchley Circle, many more. Various historical mystery series including Benjamin January, Rosemary Simpson's recent one, Sujata Massey's new Perveen Mistry series. I was active in steampunk for awhile, a bit ago, which is demi-historical, at least.
As far as writing, Agent Carter, and a couple of Westerns (which is odd as I'm not generally a Westerns fan), Deadwood and Alias Smith & Jones. I'm currently working on the first of what I hope will be a series of mysteries set in 19th century NYC.
Also, I went to grad school for the Victorian novel.
Got any more historical comms we've missed? No, but happy to see some of the ones being listed here!
